Valdez, AK – Valdez School District staff received notification that a school bus carrying students home from the Regionals basketball tournament in Delta slid into a ditch late Sunday morning.

At approximately 10:45 a.m. Sunday, Valdez School District staff received notification that a school bus carrying the Valdez High School band and cheerleaders home from the Regional Basketball tournament slid into a ditch about one-quarter mile south of Meier’s Lake on the Richardson Highway.

No injuries were reported amongst the 19 high school students and one adult on board the bus at the time of the incident. All parents of the involved students have been notified.

First Student, the contracted company responsible for Valdez School District bus operations, dispatched another bus from Glennallen to pick up the passengers. Drivers of other vehicles traveling with the group transported the students to Meier’s Lake Roadhouse to await the arrival of the replacement bus.

No significant damage to the bus has been reported. Preliminary reports indicate the bus slid into the ditch due to icy road conditions.

Valdez School District administration is currently working with First Student to review established safety protocols for school bus operations.
